Real Life Retreats

Two and a half hours south west of Barcelona Airport, along the coast and inland in the province of Teruel, lies the region of Matarannya, a remote but easily reached corner of Eastern Aragon. On a sun baked hillside just outside the village of Lledo is the four hectare plot of land that I own. A productive olive grove of around eighty trees occupies the well-tended lower terraces, while the steeper overgrown upper terraces hide neglected unfruitful sleeping olive trees, madrones or strawberry trees with their strange seedy fruit (and the main ingredient in the local moonshine), prickly juniper bushes and aromatic clumps of rosemary.

From the terraces you can enjoy the stunning views of the Puertos de Beceite mountain range that once inspired Picasso. Inhabited by Ibex and Wild Boar and watched over by vultures and eagles, the views offer a breathtaking vista.

This is where I plan to build Casa La Serenidad de Sargantana, my off-grid home and holistic health retreat. The bore hole has been successfully drilled, initial plans drawn up and clearing has already begun on the upper terraces to clear the upper terraces. There is an ‘almacet’ or small stone shed waiting to be upgraded and made use of.

There has been a huge growth in ‘wellness’ tourism over the last few years. It is my aim to provide guests with retreats to rejuvenate, replenish and restore their health and well-being with the knowledge and resources to enable them to continue with their new healthier habits when they return home. They will have the opportunity to enjoy essential oil treatments, yoga classes and cookery demonstrations. The emphasis will be on real, traditional food and as this blissfully unspoiled area is famed for its cured hams, game, olive oil, goat’s cheese, honey, walnuts, almonds and wine there will be no shortage of nourishing, tasty foods to be enjoyed.

The project will also incorporate a permaculture project, to build a food forest and provide the opportunity for people to come and partake in courses on the subject.

With my background as an artist I will incorporate art in the retreats. Making art is great form of meditation and as an effective means of self-development.

My ultimate goal is to create an oasis of calm and tranquillity in a stunning setting for people to take time out to improve their health and wellbeing.

In the meantime...

I have partnered up with Gina at Masia Katmandu (masiakatmandu.com) to offer retreats. This will be a retreat with a difference – the opportunity to learn a new skill – the Aromatouch Technique Treatment. This is a 5 night stay with the opportunity to put your new skill into practice immediately.
